Kingstown, St. Vincent and the Grenadines: The International Cricket Council (ICC) has penalized Bangladesh pacer Tanzim Hasan Sakib for initiating inappropriate physical contact with Nepal captain Rohit Paudel during a T20 World Cup 2024 Group D match held on June 16 at the Arnos Vale Ground. Sakib was found guilty of breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct and received a fine amounting to 15 percent of his match fees. Additionally, one demerit point was added to his disciplinary record, marking his first offence within a 24-month period.

Incident Details

The incident took place at the end of the third over of Nepal’s innings. Following a delivery, Tanzim Hasan Sakib aggressively approached Nepal’s batter, Rohit Paudel. The exchange, initially verbal with Sakib repeatedly shouting “What happened?” escalated into physical contact. The confrontation required intervention by on-field umpires and teammates to separate the two players.

ICC Code of Conduct Violation

Sakib was found in violation of Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which addresses “inappropriate physical contact with a Player, Player Support Personnel, Umpire, Match Referee or any other person (including a spectator during an International Match).” Level 1 breaches can result in penalties ranging from an official reprimand to a maximum of 50 percent of a player’s match fee, and may include one or two demerit points.

When a player accrues four or more demerit points within a 24-month period, these are converted into suspension points, potentially leading to a ban. Two suspension points equate to a ban from one Test or two ODIs or T20Is.

Acknowledgment and Sanction

Tanzim Hasan Sakib admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by Richie Richardson of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, negating the need for a formal hearing. The charge was levelled by on-field umpires Ahsan Raza and Sam Nogajski, third umpire Jayaraman Madanagopal, and fourth umpire Kumar Dharmasena.

Performance and Outcome

Despite the incident, Tanzim Hasan Sakib was named Player of the Match for his outstanding performance, taking four wickets for seven runs, helping Bangladesh bowl Nepal out for 85 runs while defending a total of 106. The 21-run victory secured Bangladesh’s place in the Super Eight stage of the tournament. Unfortunately, Nepal was eliminated from the tournament without any wins in their four matches.

This incident highlights the ICC’s commitment to maintaining discipline and sportsmanship on the field, ensuring that such behavior is appropriately sanctioned.
