New Delhi – Former Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman, Ramiz Raja, has highlighted key tactical errors that contributed to Pakistan’s shocking defeat to the USA in the T20 World Cup by 5 runs. The match at the Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas ended with the USA celebrating a surprising victory over the traditionally strong Pakistan team.

Super Over Decisions
In a critical Super Over, Pakistan failed to capitalize, which Raja attributes to several strategic missteps. Despite an opportunity to secure victory in the regular innings, Haris Rauf couldn’t defend 15 runs in the last over, pushing the match into a Super Over.
The USA batted first in the Super Over and scored 18 runs, aided by inconsistencies from Mohammad Amir. When it came time for Pakistan to chase, the decision to send Iftikhar Ahmed to strike while leaving Fakhar Zaman, a more suitable match-up against the USA’s left-arm pacer Saurabh Netravalkar, at the non-striker’s end was a crucial error.

Tactical Blunder
Raja emphasized that the left-handed Fakhar would have been more effective against Netravalkar. “Left-arm batter plays a left-arm pacer better,” Raja said on his YouTube channel. He criticized the choice of Shadab Khan, who had been productive earlier but was not ideal for the high-pressure situation. “Shadab (Khan) worked a lot to score those 40 runs. It doesn’t mean he has form or can go in the crunch moments and score fours or sixes.”
Bowling Strategy
Further criticism was directed at the decision to give Mohammad Amir the ball for the Super Over instead of Shaheen Shah Afridi. Amir’s approach, deviating from his strengths, was seen as a critical error. Raja pointed out, “Mohammad Amir tried to do fancy things; his go-to ball is the Yorker, but there was no control.”
Raja lamented the lack of motivation and cohesion in Pakistan’s performance, noting that the team did not seem prepared to fight through the game’s critical moments. “Pakistan made mistake after mistake in the selection and strategy aspect… it was a dispirited performance. Nobody looked motivated to fight in the game.”
Upcoming Match
Pakistan’s next match will see them face their arch-rivals India on Sunday at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York. The team will need to address these tactical errors and display greater resolve if they hope to bounce back from this defeat.

The insights provided by Ramiz Raja underscore the importance of strategic decision-making and player utilization in high-stakes cricket matches. Pakistan will need to learn quickly from this experience to avoid similar pitfalls in future games.
