As the fifth phase of the Lok Sabha elections is underway in Maharashtra, Bollywood stars are making their way to the polling booths. Among them, actor Akshay Kumar cast his vote for the first time since regaining his Indian citizenship. Proudly displaying his inked finger, Akshay shared his thoughts with the media stationed outside his polling booth.
Speaking to the press, Akshay Kumar expressed his joy about participating in the democratic process after officially becoming an Indian citizen again in August 2023. “I want my India to be developed and strong. I voted keeping that in mind. India should vote for what they deem is right… I think voter turnout will be good,” he stated.
Akshay Kumar had initially applied for Canadian citizenship in the 1990s after a string of 15 box office failures. However, as his career took off in India, he decided to reapply for Indian citizenship in 2019. Reflecting on his decision to renounce his Canadian passport, Akshay previously mentioned, “India is everything to me… Whatever I have earned, whatever I have gained is from here. And I’m fortunate that I get a chance to give back. You feel bad when people say things without knowing anything,” he said during an interview with Aaj Tak.
Other Bollywood celebrities, including Janhvi Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao of ‘Mr. and Mrs. Mahi’ fame, also arrived early to cast their votes. Farhan Akhtar and Zoya Akhtar were among those who voted on May 20.
Akshay Kumar was recently seen in the action drama ‘Bade Miyan Chote Miyan’, which also starred Tiger Shroff. Despite high expectations, the film did not perform well at the box office.
