Spiti Valley, June 15: Three days after his disappearance, the body of 31-year-old American base jumper Trevor Bokstaahlar was discovered in a ravine between Kee and Tashigang in Spiti Valley, located in the Lahaul and Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh. However, the retrieval of his body has been delayed due to the danger posed by falling rocks.

Discovery and Initial Response

Bokstaahlar went missing on Thursday while visiting Spiti Valley, a popular destination for adventure sports enthusiasts. Rescue teams, comprising members from the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), the Dogra Regiment, and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), found his body on Sunday evening. Due to the perilous conditions, the teams have yet to safely retrieve it.

Efforts to Recover the Body

Sources reported that the body was secured in a safe location to prevent further damage from the shooting stones. A coordinated effort to retrieve Bokstaahlar’s body resumed on Monday morning.

Mayank Chaudhary, Superintendent of Police, Lahaul and Spiti, explained, “A rented motorcycle belonging to the victim was found abandoned near Tashigang on June 13. On June 14, with assistance from the Dogra Regiment of the Army, a drone identified a parachute lodged in a deep ravine between Kee and Tashigang.”

Circumstances of Disappearance

Bokstaahlar’s father alerted the police about his son’s disappearance from Kaza, Himachal Pradesh. It was through his father that police learned of Bokstaahlar’s passion for base jumping, a sport involving jumps from fixed objects using a parachute.

Efforts to locate Bokstaahlar intensified after scavengers were seen circling a specific area on June 16. Using binoculars, the rescue team confirmed the presence of a human body. Specialized teams from the ITBP and SDRF were then deployed for the rescue operation.

Next Steps

The police have yet to locate Bokstaahlar’s belongings, which remain missing. His family members are expected to arrive in India on Sunday, and his father is in contact with local police officials. Images of the body have been shared with the family for identification purposes.

SP Chaudhary noted that once retrieved, Bokstaahlar’s body would undergo a postmortem examination before being handed over to his family.

Community and Government Response

The tragic incident has highlighted the inherent risks associated with extreme sports like base jumping. Authorities are also reviewing safety measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. The local community and international adventure sports enthusiasts are mourning the loss of a passionate adventurer who pursued his thrill-seeking activities with great dedication.

The joint efforts of various rescue teams underscore the challenges faced in remote and rugged terrains, emphasizing the importance of specialized training and equipment in conducting such operations.
