A devastating train collision in the eastern Indian state of West Bengal on Monday led to the death of at least seven people and injured numerous others. The accident, involving a cargo train and a passenger train, occurred in the Phansidewa area of Darjeeling district.

Incident Details

The collision took place when a cargo train collided with the Kanchanjunga Express near New Jalpaiguri station. The Kanchanjunga Express was traveling from Tripura to Sealdah station in Kolkata. The accident caused severe damage, with several carriages derailing and one being thrust dangerously high into the air, balanced atop another.

Immediate Response and Rescue Efforts

Upon learning of the incident, State Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee quickly mobilized resources. “Doctors, ambulances, and disaster teams have been rushed to the site for rescue, recovery, and medical assistance,” Banerjee shared on social media platform X.

Shocked to learn, just now, about a tragic train accident, in Phansidewa area of Darjeeling district. While details are awaited, Kanchenjunga Express has reportedly been hit by a goods train. DM, SP, doctors, ambulances and disaster teams have been rushed to the site for rescue,…

Rescue operations were immediately initiated. A combined effort by local police, the Railway Protection Force, and medical teams saw the injured being transported to nearby hospitals. Indian Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed that senior officials had also arrived at the scene to oversee the rescue operations and provide necessary aid.

Enhanced ex-gratia compensation will be provided to the victims;
₹10 Lakh in case of death,
₹2.5 Lakh towards grievous and ₹50,000 for minor injuries.

Eyewitness Accounts and Casualties

Local police officer Iftikar-Ul-Hassan reported, “We have confirmation of seven deaths and 39 passengers admitted to a local hospital with various injuries.” Eyewitnesses described a scene of chaos and devastation, with rescue teams working tirelessly to extricate passengers from the wreckage.

Rajesh Kumar Singh from the Railway Protection Force stated, “We just saw the bodies of a dead driver and a guard. Their bodies were taken out. Some more bodies may be under the crash site, but we don’t yet know for sure.” The difficult terrain and the severe damage to the train carriages made the rescue operation particularly challenging.

Cause of the Collision

Initial investigations by railway authorities indicated that the cargo train had overshot a signal, leading to the fatal collision. Sabyasachi De, spokesperson for Northeast Frontier Railway, explained that three of the four derailed compartments were carrying cargo, while one was carrying passengers.

Background on Indian Railway Accidents

Train accidents are a common occurrence in India, home to one of the world’s largest rail networks. Over 12 million people travel on 14,000 trains daily. Despite its vastness and significance, the network is plagued by issues such as human error and outdated signaling systems, which are often the cause of such accidents.

In June of the previous year, a catastrophic train accident involving three trains resulted in nearly 300 deaths. This incident highlighted the urgent need for safety upgrades and better management within the railway system.

Government and Public Reaction

The recent accident has once again brought to light the vulnerabilities in India’s rail infrastructure. In response to ongoing issues, the government has initiated investments aimed at upgrading the railway system. These include improvements in station facilities and the implementation of electronic signal systems to enhance safety and efficiency.

Future Measures

As rescue operations continue and the investigation proceeds, authorities are expected to delve deeper into the causes of this accident and explore measures to prevent such tragedies in the future. The emphasis will likely be on technological upgrades, better training for railway staff, and stringent enforcement of safety protocols.

This latest incident serves as a grim reminder of the challenges facing India’s railways and underscores the critical need for continued investment and reform to ensure the safety and reliability of this vital transportation network.
