Mizoram: Indian Railways is making significant strides in enhancing connectivity in the Northeast, with several key projects underway. Anil Kumar Khandelwal, Member Infrastructure of the Railway Board, recently inspected the ongoing railway projects from May 13th to May 15th, 2024, focusing on improving transportation infrastructure under the Government of India’s ‘Capital Connectivity’ initiatives and ‘Act East Policy’.
Bhairabi–Sairang New Railway Line Project
On May 13, Khandelwal inspected the Bhairabi–Sairang New Railway Line Project in Mizoram. The project aims to link Mizoram with the rest of India through reliable rail connectivity. Currently, about 93% of the project is completed. The 51.38 km long railway line includes 55 major bridges, 87 minor bridges, and tunnels stretching a total of 12,853 meters. Notably, the project features a bridge with a 104-meter tall pier, significantly taller than the Qutub Minar. The project also comprises four new stations.

Jiribam–Imphal New Line Project
The following day, May 14, Khandelwal inspected the Jiribam–Imphal New Line Project in Manipur. This project, which is 77% complete, will connect Manipur with the rest of the country. The 111 km long line includes 52 tunnels, 11 major bridges, and 129 minor bridges. It boasts the world’s tallest pier railway bridge, standing at 141 meters.
Agartala–Akhaura International Rail Connectivity Project
On May 15, the inspection continued with the Agartala–Akhaura International Rail Connectivity Project. This project aims to connect Akhaura station in Bangladesh with Nischintpur in Tripura, India. The dual-gauge rail line will facilitate both passenger and goods interchange between the two countries, enhancing trade, tourism, and socio-economic development.
These projects are set to vastly improve connectivity for the residents of Mizoram, Manipur, and Tripura. By providing stable and efficient rail links, the projects will support regional economic growth, boost small-scale industries, and improve the supply of essential goods at lower costs. Additionally, the international rail link with Bangladesh is expected to strengthen bilateral relations and economic ties between the two nations.
The completion of these projects will mark a significant milestone in the development of the Northeast, contributing to the broader goal of national integration and economic prosperity.
