BCCI Eyes Australian Legend Ricky Ponting & Stephen Fleming as Potential Successor to Rahul Dravid as India Head Coach

With the Board of Control for Cricket in India hunting for a new India head coach in the T20 World Cup season, former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming has emerged as a contender to replace Rahul Dravid after the ICC event.

With Rahul Dravid’s tenure as India’s head coach set to conclude after the T20 World Cup 2024, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is on the lookout for his successor. While reports initially pointed towards Stephen Fleming as a potential candidate, recent developments suggest that the BCCI is also considering former Australian captain Ricky Ponting for the coveted role.

Ponting, who currently serves as the head coach of the Delhi Capitals in the IPL and the Washington Freedom franchise in Major League Cricket (MLC), emerges as a strong contender alongside Fleming. However, despite their extensive knowledge of Indian cricket, both coaches’ responses to the proposition have been lukewarm, raising doubts about their willingness to take on the full-time responsibilities of the India head coach position.

India has a history of success under foreign coaches, with notable achievements under the stewardship of John Wright, Gary Kirsten, and Duncan Fletcher. Wright instilled a sense of confidence in the team, making them formidable opponents both at home and abroad. Kirsten guided India to their second ODI World Cup triumph in 2011, while Fletcher led the team to victory in the ICC Champions Trophy in 2013.

Although India has favored domestic coaches in recent years, reports suggest that the BCCI is now open to considering foreign candidates for the role. While Jay Shah has indicated that Rahul Dravid can reapply for the position, it appears that Dravid’s focus may shift towards coaching the Test team, leaving the door open for a new coach to lead the white-ball formats.

Despite speculation surrounding VVS Laxman’s potential succession at the National Cricket Academy (NCA), the BCCI seems inclined to maintain the current setup, further fueling speculation about the next head coach appointment.

The incoming head coach’s term will commence on July 1, 2024, with the high-profile Test series against Australia in Australia looming as one of the early challenges in his tenure. As the BCCI navigates this transition, the cricketing world eagerly awaits the announcement of India’s next head coach, poised to steer the team through the next phase of its journey.
