The Indian Army has achieved a remarkable feat by establishing two of the world’s highest tank repair facilities near the China border in Eastern Ladakh. With over 500 tanks and infantry combat vehicles deployed in the region, these facilities have been set up at altitudes exceeding 14,500 feet, making them crucial for supporting operations in one of the world’s highest battlefields.
In response to the standoff between India and China that began in April-May 2020, the Indian Army swiftly deployed a large number of tanks and BMP combat vehicles, including domestically produced armoured vehicles like Quick Reaction Fighting Vehicles, to Eastern Ladakh. However, maintaining and repairing these vehicles in such high-altitude areas posed significant logistical challenges.

To address this, the Indian Army established Medium Maintenance (Reset) Facilities at Nyoma and near KM-148 on the DS-DBO Road in the DBO sector. These facilities are strategically located in the primary areas of tank and infantry combat vehicle operations in Eastern Ladakh.
The creation of these maintenance facilities marks a significant investment in infrastructure to support armoured vehicle operations in extreme conditions. Army Chief General Manoj Pande recently visited one of these facilities, underscoring their importance in ensuring the serviceability and mission reliability of tanks and infantry combat vehicles.
Despite rugged terrain and challenging weather conditions with temperatures dropping to minus 40 degrees Celsius, these facilities enable the combat fleet to remain operationally ready. By staging forward specialist technical support infrastructure for armoured fighting vehicles, the Indian Army has significantly enhanced its operational efficiency and battle readiness in Eastern Ladakh.

The establishment of these repair facilities comes against the backdrop of the ongoing standoff between India and China in the region. Both sides have deployed substantial troop numbers and military equipment near the borders, necessitating robust logistical support for sustaining operations in the high-altitude environment.
In response to China’s unilateral actions to change the status quo along the Line of Actual Control, the Indian Army mobilized heavy armoured elements swiftly. This included the transportation of tanks and combat vehicles from deserts and plains to Eastern Ladakh using C-17 transport aircraft, demonstrating India’s resolve to counter any adversary’s aggression in the region.
