In a stunning turn of events in Jharkhand, a series of raids conducted by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has unearthed a staggering amount of over 35 crores in cash. The raids, spanning over 17 hours, were linked to a minister in the Jharkhand government, shedding light on the depths of corruption within the state’s political establishment.

The focus of the raids was on the residence of Sanjeev Lal, the personal secretary of Alamgir Alam, the Rural Development Minister and a prominent Congress leader in Jharkhand. Despite Lal’s modest salary of around 20,000 rupees per month, the ED discovered bundles of cash totaling more than 35 crores in his house. This revelation has raised serious questions about the source of such vast wealth and the potential involvement of high-ranking officials in corrupt practices.

The ED’s investigation was triggered by allegations of corruption against Virendra Kumar Ram, a former Chief Engineer in the Jharkhand Rural Development Department. Ram, arrested by the ED in February 2023, was accused of involvement in corrupt practices related to the allocation of tenders for development projects in the state. His arrest and subsequent interrogation likely provided crucial leads that led to the discovery of the illicit wealth amassed by Lal.

The scale of corruption uncovered in Jharkhand is staggering, with previous incidents highlighting the extent of the problem. In December of last year, Income Tax raids targeting politicians and officials in the state resulted in the seizure of over 300 crores, including assets belonging to Congress Rajya Sabha MP Dheeraj Sahu. Additionally, the arrest of Pankaj Mishra, a close aide to Chief Minister Hemant Soren, in 2022 further underscored the pervasive nature of corruption within the state’s political circles.

The revelations from the recent raids have sparked outrage and calls for accountability from opposition parties, particularly the BJP. Demands for Minister Alam’s resignation and subsequent arrest have intensified, with allegations of complicity in corruption echoing throughout the political landscape.

The events unfolding in Jharkhand serve as a stark reminder of the urgent need to root out corruption and restore public trust in governance. As investigations continue and the full extent of corruption is exposed, it is imperative that those responsible are held accountable and measures are implemented to prevent such egregious abuses of power in the future.
