NEW DELHI: In a significant development, customs officials at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport have arrested Shiv Kumar Prasad, the former personal assistant of Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, on charges of smuggling gold. Prasad was caught with 500 grams of gold, according to sources within the customs department.
Details of the Incident
The arrest occurred when Prasad, who holds an aerodrome entry permit allowing him access to the airport premises, arrived at the airport to receive a person arriving from Dubai. According to officials, Prasad and the passenger were apprehended while the passenger was attempting to hand over approximately 500 grams of gold to Prasad.

“Prasad entered the airport premises and was receiving a packet when he was held along with the passenger,” customs officials told ANI. Both individuals are now under investigation, and their credentials have been verified.

Reactions from Shashi Tharoor and Political Implications
Reacting to the arrest, Shashi Tharoor expressed his shock at learning that a former member of his team had been involved in such activities. Tharoor clarified that Shiv Kumar Prasad had been providing him with part-time services related to airport facilitation assistance.
“I am shocked to be informed that a former member of my team was arrested. I do not condone any alleged wrongdoing and fully support the authorities in their efforts to investigate the matter,” Tharoor stated. He emphasized that the law must take its own course and assured his cooperation with the ongoing investigation.
Political Repercussions
The arrest has triggered a swift response from the BJP. Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar criticized both the Congress and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM), referring to them as an “alliance of gold smugglers.” Chandrasekhar’s remarks on social media highlighted previous instances of alleged involvement in gold smuggling by individuals associated with these parties.
“First CM Secy involved in gold smuggling, now Cong MP ‘aide’/PA detained for gold smuggling. CPM and Cong – both INDIA alliance partners – alliance of gold smugglers,” Chandrasekhar posted on X.
Continuing Investigation
As the investigation proceeds, customs officials are working to uncover further details regarding the smuggling operation and the involvement of other potential suspects. The arrest underscores the ongoing efforts by customs authorities to crack down on smuggling activities at major airports across the country.
This incident has not only put a spotlight on the individuals directly involved but also sparked a broader political debate about accountability and the integrity of public officials and their associates.
