Punjab, India: In a distinctive cultural twist, the residents of Tarn Taran in Punjab are creating a slice of New York City within their locality by constructing a replica of the Statue of Liberty. A viral video circulating on social media captures the installation of the replica atop an under-construction building, highlighting the ambitious nature of this project.
This creative endeavor is not unprecedented in Punjab. The region, particularly its rural areas, is known for an array of unique statues and structures adorning rooftops of water towers, homes, and other buildings. From statues of bodybuilders to replicas of cruise ships and alcohol bottles, these rooftops are often adorned with striking and imaginative structures that leave onlookers intrigued.

The original Statue of Liberty, located in New York City, is a symbol of freedom and democracy. A neoclassical copper statue, it was a gift from France to the United States and was designed by French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi. Its metal framework was created by Gustave Eiffel, the civil engineer renowned for the Eiffel Tower. Dedicated on October 28, 1886, the statue stands 305 feet tall with its pedestal, holding a torch and a tablet inscribed with the date July 4, 1776. The seven spikes on its crown represent the seven seas and continents.
The idea for the Statue of Liberty originated in 1865 with Édouard René de Laboulaye. It was designated a National Monument in 1924 and underwent significant restoration in 1986 to commemorate its centennial. Its design reflects the colossal neoclassical architectural forms that were prominent in France at the time.
Although the Tarn Taran replica may not match the grandeur of the original, it symbolizes the local residents’ admiration for global landmarks. This initiative reflects a broader trend in Punjab, where villagers take pride in enhancing their terraces with unique and eye-catching statues. The viral video underscores the blend of global inspiration and local creativity that characterizes the region, highlighting a community’s effort to celebrate and emulate iconic structures from around the world.
