A significant milestone is on the horizon for the Indian Air Force (IAF) as the delivery of the first LCA Mark 1A fighter aircraft by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is expected by July this year. Originally slated for delivery in the February-March timeframe, a minor delay occurred due to technical reasons, according to defence officials.

Recent reviews between the Indian Air Force and HAL have paved the way for the anticipated delivery, scheduled for July. HAL conducted the first flight of the fighter last month, and additional integration trials are underway, with completion expected in the coming weeks prior to delivery to the IAF.

The induction of the indigenous fighter aircraft into the force marks a significant stride towards self-reliance in the military sector. It is speculated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi may be invited to commemorate this momentous occasion.

The LCA Mark 1A project was initiated under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. An order worth Rs 48,000 crore for 83 planes has already been placed, with another expected order worth Rs 65,000 crore for 97 planes by the end of the current financial year.

The Defence Ministry has issued a tender to HAL for the purchase of 97 made-in-India LCA Mark 1A fighter jets, marking the largest order for indigenous military hardware in India’s history. This program aims to replace the ageing fleet of MiG-21s, MiG-23s, and MiG-27s, furthering the country’s commitment to modernizing its defence capabilities.

With the full backing of the Defence Ministry and Air Headquarters, the indigenous fighter aircraft program is poised to bolster efforts towards indigenization and create substantial business opportunities for small and medium enterprises engaged in the defence sector nationwide.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been a staunch advocate for the revival of HAL, which has secured orders for the construction of various indigenous fighter aircraft and helicopters, along with their engines, under his government. The Prime Minister himself undertook a sortie in the trainer variant of the indigenous fighter, marking a historic moment in Indian aviation.

The announcement to acquire 97 additional LCA Mark 1A fighter jets was made by Indian Air Force chief VR Chaudhari on foreign soil in Spain, highlighting the country’s commitment to bolstering its indigenous defence capabilities.
