Nagaland: The aftermath of Cyclone Remal has led to the death of four people and significant damage to more than 40 houses across Nagaland. The heavy rainfall and subsequent flooding have caused severe disruptions, with the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) reporting extensive damage in several districts.

Casualties and Incidents:
A tragic incident occurred in Laruri village under the Meluri subdivision, where a seven-year-old boy drowned due to the heavy rainfall. Additionally, two other drowning incidents were reported from Doyang Dam in Wokha district on Monday. In Rekizu ward of Phek district, an elderly man lost his life after being crushed by a collapsing wall.

Damage to Property:
The NSDMA has documented widespread damage to houses and properties across the state. Notable areas affected include:

  • Chuchuyimlang village in Mokokchung district
  • Noksen subdivision under Tuensang district
  • Awotsakili village in Zunheboto district

Rescue and Relief Operations:
Personnel from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed to assist with rescue and relief operations. In a significant development, the NSDMA utilized an underwater drone for search operations, marking a first in the state’s history. This advanced technology was employed to enhance the effectiveness of the search efforts amid challenging conditions.

Additional Challenges:
The incessant rain has also caused mudslides, particularly in Kikruma village in Phek district. These mudslides have further complicated the rescue and relief efforts, posing additional risks to the affected communities.

Cyclone Remal’s Impact:
Cyclone Remal, which made landfall around midnight on Sunday, pummelled the coasts of West Bengal and Bangladesh with devastating wind speeds. The cyclone’s impact has been felt far and wide, with Nagaland experiencing heavy rainfall and resultant flooding.

Conclusion:
The heavy rainfall and flooding caused by Cyclone Remal have led to significant loss of life and property in Nagaland. The state’s disaster management authorities are working tirelessly to provide relief and support to the affected communities. The use of advanced technology, such as underwater drones, highlights the innovative approaches being employed to enhance rescue operations. However, the ongoing adverse weather conditions continue to pose challenges, necessitating sustained efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of the residents.
