In a move set to revolutionize road safety and traffic control, the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) is gearing up to introduce the state’s first-ever Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) on the bustling Mumbai-Pune Expressway. This innovative system is slated to modernize traffic management strategies and bolster safety measures along one of Maharashtra’s most vital transportation arteries.

Scheduled for operational deployment by the first week of June, the ITMS is poised to bring a host of technological advancements to the expressway’s infrastructure. Among its key features are 218 state-of-the-art AI-enabled CCTV cameras strategically positioned across 39 gantries spanning a 95-kilometer stretch. These cameras, deployed as part of the initial phase, will be instrumental in detecting and addressing a wide array of traffic violations.

Furthermore, toll booths along the expressway will be outfitted with automatic number plate recognition technology, streamlining the process of issuing e-challans to offenders. Complementing these advancements are weigh-in-motion devices at expressway entries, designed to enhance monitoring of goods transporters, and weather monitoring systems stationed at key locations to provide real-time weather updates.

One of the notable highlights of the ITMS is its ability to continuously monitor vehicle speeds and detect traffic rule violations. Superintendent of Highway Traffic Police, Tanaji Chikle, emphasized the system’s proactive approach to enforcement, citing plans to sound off a warning hooter near toll booths when speeding vehicles are detected, thereby promoting adherence to traffic regulations and fostering road discipline.

Moreover, the implementation of the ITMS is poised to streamline the issuance of e-challans, with traffic police withholding ‘no dues certificates’ from vehicle owners with outstanding fines, a move aimed at ensuring compliance and fostering a culture of responsible driving.

Looking ahead, MSRDC’s ambitious plans extend beyond the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, with similar ITMS setups slated for deployment on the Samruddhi Mahamarg, marking a significant stride towards modernizing highway infrastructure and enhancing road safety across Maharashtra.

With its comprehensive suite of features and real-time monitoring capabilities, the ITMS is poised to redefine traffic management norms, ushering in a new era of efficiency and safety on Maharashtra’s vital expressway network.
