In a tragic incident in Mumbai’s Ghatkopar area, the death toll from the collapse of an illegal billboard has risen to 14, with 74 individuals reported injured. The 100-foot-tall structure collapsed during dust storms and unseasonal rains that battered Mumbai on Monday.
According to officials from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), search and rescue efforts are ongoing at the site of the accident, which occurred at a petrol pump in Chheda Nagar. Of the 74 individuals rescued, 31 have been discharged from Rajawadi Hospital, while 35 are currently receiving medical treatment. Unfortunately, one individual remains in critical condition.
Additionally, eight more injured individuals are undergoing treatment at various private and civic-run hospitals in the city.
In a separate incident in Wadala, a multi-storied steel parking lot near the Shreeji Towers building collapsed onto a main road during the squally dust storm around 4:15 p.m. on Monday. The collapse resulted in the crushing of approximately a dozen vehicles, with one person trapped inside a car and two others sustaining injuries, as reported by officials.
The series of unfortunate events highlight the dangers posed by inclement weather conditions and inadequate infrastructure in Mumbai. Authorities are working tirelessly to conduct rescue operations and provide necessary medical assistance to the affected individuals.
