BENGALURU – In a significant move to bolster international space collaboration, US Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti visited the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) headquarters on Friday. The visit marked the culmination of high-level meetings aimed at deepening cooperation in various domains, including Earth observation, human spaceflight, and lunar exploration.
Proposal for “QUAD Satellite”
During his visit, Ambassador Garcetti, accompanied by a delegation, met with ISRO Chairman S. Somanath. One of the key proposals discussed was the development of a “QUAD satellite,” which would be a collaborative effort involving India, the US, Japan, and Australia. This initiative aims to enhance collective capabilities and foster stronger ties among the QUAD nations in the realm of space exploration.

Collaborative Missions and Future Projects
The discussions covered a wide range of potential joint missions. Highlights included:
- Advanced Imaging Spectrometer Satellite: Building on the NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar (NISAR) mission, this project aims to enhance imaging and spectrometry capabilities.
- G-20 Environmental Monitoring Satellite: India proposed a satellite dedicated to environmental monitoring and climate change, aligning with global sustainability goals.
- Gaganyaan Cargo Module: Exploring the use of India’s Gaganyaan cargo module to transfer supplies to the International Space Station (ISS).
S. Somanath emphasized the potential for US-India university collaborations on advanced detectors and electronics packaging. He also underscored the importance of standardizing docking interfaces across human spaceflight programs to enable broader utilization of space platforms.
Lunar Exploration and Navigation
Officials from both nations discussed the possibility of deploying a navigation architecture on the lunar surface or in lunar orbit to support future exploration missions. This collaboration could significantly enhance the efficiency and safety of lunar missions, providing robust navigation support for various international projects.
Strengthening the Partnership
The meetings concluded with a strong commitment to further strengthen the US-India partnership in space. Both sides expressed optimism about future prospects and agreed to explore new cooperative endeavors across the civilian space program. Discussions also touched on:
- Advancing space science and space economy initiatives.
- Establishing joint working groups.
- The Artemis Accords, which aim to return humans to the Moon and eventually to Mars.
- Utilizing US laser reflector payloads on Chandrayaan-3.
Ambassador Garcetti lauded ISRO’s achievements, stating, “I’m deeply impressed by ISRO’s incredible accomplishments in space exploration. The US greatly values our partnership with India’s world-class space program as we pursue new frontiers of discovery.”
US-India Space Cooperation Conference
Garcetti and Somanath also participated in the US-India Space Cooperation Conference held in Bengaluru. The conference provided a platform for both leaders to advocate for enhanced partnerships and collaborative efforts between the two countries, further solidifying their commitment to joint space exploration initiatives.
This visit and the subsequent discussions underscore the growing collaboration between the US and India in the space sector, heralding a new era of international cooperation and technological advancement.
