India Extends $50 Million Funding to Maldives Amid Diplomatic Tensions

Despite strained ties, India has provided financial assistance to the Maldives by extending $50 million in budgetary support through a Treasury Bill. This move comes as a gesture of goodwill and longstanding friendship between the two nations, as stated by Maldivian Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer.

The Gesture of Goodwill

The Mohamed Muizzu-led Maldivian government expressed its gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Indian government for the financial aid extended to the island nation. The request for the budget support was made during Zameer’s official visit to New Delhi from 8-10 May 2024. India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar approved the rollover of the $50 million Treasury Bill for an additional year, reinforcing the collaborative partnership between the two countries.

Maldivian Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer expressed his gratitude to the Indian government for its timely support. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Zameer remarked, “This is a true gesture of goodwill which signifies the longstanding friendship between Maldives and India.” The request for a budget support of $50 million in the form of a Treasury bill was made by Zameer during his official visit to New Delhi, where he met with India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar.

Financial Relief from India

The State Bank of India (SBI) played a crucial role in extending the Treasury Bill to the Maldives under a government-to-government arrangement at zero cost, making it interest-free for the Maldivian government. The High Commission of India in the Maldives confirmed the continuation of subscription for another year, highlighting the special request from the Maldivian government to secure budgetary support.

India’s act of providing financial relief to the Maldives comes as a significant gesture of goodwill amidst strained ties between the two countries. The State Bank of India (SBI) extended a government treasury bill, totaling $50 million, under a unique government-to-government arrangement at zero cost (interest-free) to the Maldivian government.
